Dating today is nothing like it was fifty years ago when many of our parents and grandparents got together. Back then, couples took the time to get to know one another, remaining abstinent until marriage, and even dating for years at a time before deciding that they had found the one. Today, many couples find themselves hooking up and breaking up after only a few dates and engaging in sex, and there are a rare few who find that someone special and can make a lasting relationship from it.
Dating, or as it was known a few centuries ago, courting, is part of everyday life. Some cultures still enforce chaperoned dates. Some still use matchmakers. Dating has even taken on new meaning as alternate lifestyles have more become recognized and accepted. That’s not counting video dating, computer dating, and other interesting ways people today get to know each other.
For anyone unfortunate enough to never have gone out on a date, dating is where two people, usually a young man and woman, although other combinations are common today, participate in an activity together to see is they get along and like each other enough to move into a more serious relationship. This could be having dinner together, seeing a movie, having a picnic, or other activities that can be done as a couple.
The first date is known as ‘going out’. The couple know they like each other in an affectionate way, but they are not sure just how much. They could hold hands, and hug, but kissing usually isn’t done until later on. From here, if they like each other enough, they will continue on and ‘date’, talk between the dates either on the phone or on-line, and get to know each other, building their relationship more and more taking it to the next level. Of course, if they aren’t compatible, they will break up and move on in their lives.
It used to be common practice for the man to pay for the date. Today, many couples ‘go Dutch’, each paying their own way or splitting the entire cost of the bill. Double dates are where two couples go out for an evening of fun and group dating is where a group of people, usually with two or more couples involved, participate in an activity. Blind dates are those where the couple has never met before and are usually set up by a mutual friend or even a dating service of some type. Long distance dating is where the couple still continue to ‘see’ each other, either when in the same area or via other means, when a large distance keeps them apart.
People who are looking for a ‘match’ outside the traditional method of dating have a variety of ways to accomplish this. Online dating is where people met by using a matchmaking website to meet and converse, and then agree to meet when they are ready. Speed dating is where large groups of people gather and talk to others for a set amount of time before moving on to speak with someone else. Interested couples usually step out of rotation to get to know each other even better. Virtual dating is where two people meet on a website to play games and use avatars to represent them. As they play and talk, they get to know each other and could eventually meet in real life. Singles events are parties, workshops, and other activities, such as cruises, where singles get together and mingle in the hopes of finding that someone special.
